I have fair skin, freckles, and light brownish-red hair. I am hoping that I could pull off either solid black or solid white. My main concern is looking too pale.

Everyone uses it now that it's been deemed a "Power Color". White formal wear tends to look a bit like a wedding gown if not done properly, which can be positively terrifying to your date. =)

I also find that earthtones work really well such as tans and browns but I dont know that you would be able to find appropriate formal wear in those colors. Red might work well, red is a powerful color and always makes a statement, however it too may bring out blemishes and such in a fair skinned person.
