What should i do to my hair for formal..?

I got my dress the other day for my christmas formal and i love it! Its a halter dress and its black and dark purple with a silk purple belt.. Well i dont have time to go to the hairdressers on the day of because i have other plans before so i need to do something myself so i was wondering if anyone had any ideas or pictures,,, Thanks:) I also need to know what looks better with a halter? hair down or up?

I'm thinkin up-do. You are wearing a halter for a reason, right. U want them to see how nice you shoulders, etc are. So.. leave a few dangling, curling, snippets of hair, and have a wonderful night.

Don't do anything too severe! I hate just pulled back and piled up and called fancy--like hairdressers like to do!
